12.      China has denounced Japan's detention of seven activists who landed on a disputed island, calling the arrests a violation of its sovereignty and demanding their immediate release.

14.      The United States vetoed(否決) a U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday condemning Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin.
