為何要學習中英新聞辭彙

1.         Eight U.S. troops died in a car bombing Thursday and two others were killed in separate incidents in Iraq, according to the U.S. military.

2.         A prosecutor(檢察官) in Tainan was arrested yesterday for allegedly taking bribes of more than NT$60 million and running an underground gambling den(地下賭場), investigators(調查員) said.

5.         A U.S. soldier was killed in fighting with Shiite gunmen in Baghdad on Tuesday, bringing the number of U.S. dead so far this month to the same as were killed in the two-month invasion of Iraq a year ago.

6.         Police gunned down(擊斃)militants who stormed security outposts(安全檢查哨) in Thailand's Muslim dominated south Wednesday, killing at least 112 people in one of the bloodiest days in the modern history of the Southeast Asian kingdom.

7.         The secretary general of the Presidential Office, Chiou I-jen (邱益仁) departed for Washington on a mission to gain the Bush administration's trust in President Chen's plans for a new Constitution, amid renewed U.S. warnings that its pledge to defend the island cannot be perceived as a blank cheque(空白支票 /名詞片語,warnings 的同位語).

12.      A homeless New York student says he slept for seven months in a university library without being caught. Steve Stanzak, 20, says he set up home in New York University's main library because he couldn't afford housing costs on top of(除了. . .之外) his tuition.

13.      A German man who called police as he thought his wife had sleepwalked(夢遊) out of their flat was shocked to find she'd left him.  It turned out she hadn't been sleepwalking, but had decided to leave her husband.

14.      Pakistan has announced plans to reduce the size of its army by 50,000 soldiers, the first cut in the nation's 57-year history.  Pakistan has some 550,000 active troops(現役軍人) and the cuts, which will save millions of dollars, take effect on 1 August.

15.      A US TV news program will dedicate(提供) an entire broadcast to a reading of the names of more than 500 American service personnel killed in action in Iraq. Presenter Ted Koppel will read the names of those who have died since the start of the war last year on Friday's edition of Nightline on ABC News.
