4.         Ma Ying-jeou(馬英九), former Kuomintang (KMT) chairman and Taipei mayor, took a major step yesterday toward running for president by establishing a campaign office(成立工作室、競選辦事處) in Taipei. Ma chose "sticking to goodness and bringing forth sunshine"(堅持善性、台灣放晴) as his major campaign theme(競選主軸). Ma told reporters at the opening of his campaign office that the honest and good-natured people in Taiwan are now living in an atmosphere of social and political discord(社會與政治的不和諧). 5.         The British Broadcasting Corporation(英國國家廣播公司) Monday appealed for any information about Alan Johnston, the network's correspondent(特派員) in Gaza(走廊) who is believed to have been kidnapped in the Palestinian territory a week ago. 8.         A fire that swept through a home for the elderly and disabled (老人及殘障人士之家)in southern Russia killed at least 62 people early Tuesday, a toll that officials attributed to safety violations and a night watchmans negligence. Many of the dead were confined to their beds and unable to flee the smoke and flames, the officials said.(3/21/2007, nytimes_)

9.         Anti-war protesters clashed(衝突) with police Thursday in Sydney near the U.S. consulate, (美國領事館) several hours before U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney(錢尼) arrived in Australia. About 200 demonstrators scuffled with police(與警察扭打) and chanted slogans demanding that Australia's prime minister, John Howard, withdraw troops from Iraq.
