1. The Dalai Lama(達賴喇嘛) says his representatives are conducting talks with Chinese officials through private channels. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told a news conference Sunday in the U.S. state of Washington(華盛頓州) that he had no direct involvement in the conversations. The Dalai Lama did not say what issues are being discussed with China, and he said it is not clear what might result from the talks. The Nobel Peace laureate also told reporters that he will resign as leader of Tibet's exiled government if violence in his homeland spirals(升高) out of control.(2008/04/14, VOA)

2. An explosion struck a vehicle ※carrying British troops on Sunday, killing(=and killed) two and wounding(=and wounded) two others on Sunday in southern Afghanistan, (阿富汗)Britan’s Defence Ministry said Monday. The incident occurred in Kandahar province and involved troops from Britain’s Royal Air Force regiment(團). “The men were conducting a routine patrol(執行例行巡邏) two kilometers west of Kandahar Airfield when the vehicle they were travelling in hit an explosive device,” the ministry said.(2008/04/14) CNN)

3. The rapid rise in food prices could push 100 million people in poor countries deeper into poverty, World Bank head(世界銀行行長), Robert Zoellick, has said. His warning follows that from the leader of the International Monetary Fund(國際貨幣基金會董事長), who said hundreds of thousands of people were at risk of starvation. Mr Zoellick proposed an action plan to boost long-run agricultural production. There have been food riots recently in a number of countries, including Haiti, the Philippines and Egypt. 4. China allows Taiwan nationals(台灣居民) to take bar examinations(參加司法考試)and those who pass can practice law(執業) on the other side of the Taiwan Strait, a Beijing official announced yesterday. Ding Lu (丁露), a Chinese administrator of bar examinations(考試司司長), said Taiwanese college graduates with a law degree may sit for the government-sponsored tests (參加大陸的司法考試) starting this year, according to press reports from Beijing. She did not say when the bar examinations will take place. (2007/4/17, China Post)

5. At least 17 Palestinians(巴勒斯坦人) and three Israeli soldiers were killed in an upsurge of violence(爆發暴力) in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip(哈瑪斯控制的加薩走廊) Wednesday. Wednesday's death toll is the highest since the Israeli military offensive(以色列軍事襲擊) in early March that killed more than 120 Gazans(加薩走廊居民). Hamas and medical officials(醫療人員) say 17 Palestinians, most civilians, were killed in separate Israeli assaults(襲擊) today, including air strikes near al-Bureij refugee camp(難民營).
