1. Officials reopened a rail line in eastern China on Tuesday, a day after the country's worst train accident in a decade killed at least 70 people and injured more than 400. Authorities have said human error was to blame when a passenger train jumped its tracks and slammed into(撞擊) another train in Shandong province(山東省). China could lease(租借) overseas farming land(農地) to beat(壓制) ※rising food prices, according to reports from Beijing. ※Soaring grain prices have encouraged the ministry of agriculture to consider the scheme, according to the Beijing Morning newspaper(北京晨報). Chinese enterprises would lease or even buy farmland in Latin America, Australia and the former Soviet Union(前蘇聯). The land in production could replace Chinese farmland ＃lost to rapidly growing cities and industrial zones().(2008/04/29, BBC)

3. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he will head a task force to deal with the unprecedented rise in global food prices. Mr. Ban made the announcement in Bern, Switzerland, Tuesday at a two-day meeting with 27 key international agencies. The agencies hope to hammer out(想出) emergency measures(緊急措施) to combat the food crisis that is causing hunger, riots and hoarding in poor nations around the world. The U.N. chief said the immediate priority is feeding the hungry. (2008/4/29, VOA)

4. The director of the CIA(美國中央情報局局長) Michael Hayden told a university audience Wednesday that China will become an economic and political competitor to the United States in the coming years but should not be treated as "an inevitable enemy." (難以避免的敵人)Although the rapid growth of the Chinese military could pose a threat to the United States and Taiwan, Hayden said, he believes that the nation's aim of military modernization is about "projecting strength(表現軍力)" and demonstrating that it has "great-power status(大國地位)." 5. Extra Russian troops have begun arriving in Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region, (分離分子區域)Russian media said on Thursday. Russia announced this week it was deploying about 1,000 additional peacekeeping troops to the region to counter what it said were Georgian plans for an attack. Georgia's pro-Western leaders(親方的喬治亞國領導們) have called the re-enforcement(增軍) irresponsible and illegal. The Russian defense ministry said the contingent would remain within the 3,000 limit ＃allowed under a United Nations-brokered(聯合國主導的) ceasefire agreement ＃signed in 1994.(2007/5/1,Reuters)
