The poet was born in the village of Stratford on the little Avon River. He was baptized in the little village church of Stratford-on-Avon, April 26, 1564, and fifty-two years later he was buried there. His father was a tanner and glover. William attended the local grammar school until he was fourteen, and as he says, picked up “ small Latin and less Greek.” His formal education was small, but his powers of observation and his faculty of curiosity were great. He did not attend the universities, but he stored up images from nature and life about him.
His father’s financial circumstances became more and more strained and William was forced to leave school. At eighteen he married Ann Hathaway, a woman eight years his senior. We have evidence that young Shakespeare was of a full amorous nature. Ann’s and his child was baptized six months after the marriage. The marriage did not prove to be an ideal one. It is also evident that he indulged in pranks of various sorts. There is some reason to believe that he left Stratford (between 1585 and 1587) because of the matter of deer stealing from one of the local gentry.
He went to London and soon became attached to the company of actors playing the Theatre of James Burbage. He stayed with Burbage as actor, playwright, and part owner for many years. His life was spent on the stage and behind the scenes.
