Practical English Grammar and Rhetoric
(九 版 六刷)
This text is intended for the Chinese student writer who knows something about English grammar yet wishes to learn rhetoric with a view to making his writing logical, forceful and clear. It contains twenty-five major sections presented in order of grammar, rhetoric and writing.
The amount of grammar is reduced to those items which are comparatively important for the student writer to know. The rhetoric sections are illustrated with simple and clear English so as to make it easier for him to understand. The writing sections deal not with general principles but with matters like basic requirements for writing: words, mechanics, writing commandments, capitalization and punctuation, etc. In teaching English writing to college students, the author is convinced, by reading students’ compositions, of their ignorance of college terminology and is often approached by students for topics to write on besides those regularly assigned. In view of this, the author intentionally adds the last two sections—college terms, one hundred and fifty suggested topics for writing—to the text.
The author is very grateful to Mr. Scott Satterfield for his kind assistance in reading the manuscript and in giving valuable suggestions.
